Case Studies of Indiana’s Success
Leadership makes a difference, and with strong leadership, bold ideas, and a little bit of courage, Indiana is now an example for other states to follow. Consider some of these success stories.
Bankruptcy to Balanced Budgets
From bankruptcy to balanced budgets, Indiana is solvent and has not raised taxes. Governor Daniels took just one year to balance the budget, and now Indiana is one of just a handful of states that have not had to raise taxes during the current economic downturn and has achieved a AAA credit rating for the first time in state history.
Infrastructure is Booming
Indiana’s infrastructre is booming as the result of Major Moves, a fully-funded ten year infrastructure plan. This has enabled the construction of long-promised roads like I-69, The Hoosier Heartland Highway, and the Fort-to-Port Project. In addition, communities all across the state are making water quality improvements and upgrading crucial infrastructure like sewer and stormwater systems.
Capping Homeowner Property Tax
The largest tax cut in history was achieved by capping homeowners property taxes at 1%.
Best Place To Do Business
Indiana has been named a “best place to do business” by Forbes and CEO Magazine. New jobs have been the result of a state government that creates an enviroment for business to thrive.
Helping Children and Keeping Our Highways Safe
While the number of state employees is its lowest since 1979, Indiana has added people where they are needed. 800 new child protection caseworkers have been hired and led to a nationally recognized Department of Child Services. 200 new state troopers contributed to a 20% reduction in traffic fatalities.
Thousands of Low-Income Hoosiers Receive Health Coverage
The Healthy Indiana Program provides Health Savings Accounts to thousands of low-income Hoosiers who previously had no coverage, and allowed them – and not the government – to manage their own health care. In addition, 70% of state employees have choosen to enter the state’s Health Savings Account program, and taken control of their health care while saving the state money.
BMV, From Worst To Best
Once one of the worst, Indiana’s Bureau of Motor Vehicles is now one of the best in the nation for customer service. Average wait time in a branch is less than 9 minutes, and customer satisfaction is 93%.
